I have just stumbled upon this photo taken for an ad agency about 13 years ago.  It was taken on film, and had a crew of about ten people assisting (mainly for the balloon team).  It took quite some time to source a good location, but eventually the agency found a field and bridge near to Shrewsbury.
The balloon and the traffic trails had hugely different exposure times (from memory - about 10 secs for balloon, and 30 secs for traffic). So, we had walkie talkies to let the pilot know when to burn gas and make the balloon glow (with seven assistants making sure the balloon didn’t take off)…. but also when to cut the gas so that I could record the traffic trails for another 20 seconds.
I can’t say I miss film. Even though I finished the photos near midnight, I went straight to a lab (on a newspaper I used to work on), just so that I could process and check the images.

A variety of tilt/shift photos can now be commissioned for advertising and editorial uses.  These give the effect of miniaturisation - making huge cities appear to be mini toy towns. These a re popular at the moment for both annual reports and construction photography.

As from today, I am now using cameras that produce files in excess of 200MB.  What does this mean?  Well, if you fancy having an image on a street poster, or the side of a huge building - I can do that.
Similarly, all stock images placed on Images of Birmingham, will now be available at a minimum of 100MB (which almost doubles their existing size).  This image of Brindleyplace is one of the first to go live.

Just to show the difference post production can make to a photograph, here is a photo of Max Beesley (a very nice man) taken during the filming of Survivors II for the BBC.

The original image on the left was pretty similar to what came out of the camera, and has been used on a variety of marketing material.  However, the image on the right was edited to give a feel for the TV programme, and has had much more usage.

I quite like both, but each has its place.

I was attacked by an Alsatian on this annual report photo shoot yesterday.  I also got to do tilt/shift photos. Every cloud has a lining of K9 saliva.

A series of photos I took, used in today’s copy of The Times.  A portrait of Glynn Purnell, the Michelin starred chef, along with his creation and restaurant.

Perhaps my best selling stock picture to date.  Used worldwide on an advertising campaign for a US energy company, it is now proving popular in Australia.
